LTE and 5G Routers: Backup and Primary Internet Guide (South Africa)

Updated 27 October 2026 by the Web Direct team, Diep River, Cape Town.

An LTE or 5G router gives you internet from a mobile SIM, either as your main connection where fibre is not available, or as automatic backup when fibre goes down.

What to look for

  • 4G (LTE) or 5G: 5G is much faster where coverage exists; LTE-Advanced (Cat 6 and up) is reliable almost everywhere.
  • Network bands: make sure the router supports the bands used by your network (Vodacom, MTN, Telkom, Cell C or Rain).
  • External antenna ports: useful in weak-signal areas, farms and estates.
  • Failover: some routers switch automatically from fibre to SIM when fibre fails.
  • Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi 6 for modern devices, and Ethernet ports for PCs and access points.

Keep it running in outages

LTE towers sometimes go down in long outages, but most have battery backup. Put your router on a small UPS so your end keeps working. See our UPS guide.

For Wi-Fi coverage, see our Wi-Fi networking guide. Shop routers, including Cudy, TP-Link and Huawei LTE and 5G models.

Frequently asked questions

Will any SIM work in an LTE router?

Most unlocked routers accept any South African SIM, but check the supported bands for your network, especially for 5G.

Can an LTE router back up my fibre automatically?

Yes, if the router supports WAN failover, or by using a dual-WAN router with the LTE router as the second connection.

Is 5G worth it?

Where your network has strong 5G coverage, yes: speeds can rival fibre. Check coverage maps first.
